So, as some people below have stated: nowhere in the rhyme was it stated that he was an egg. This is true… and due to the way the nursery rhyme was passed down and history was forgotten, people assumed it was an egg. But let’s clear it up… Humpty Dumpty was the nickname given to one of the biggest canons ever crafted prior to the Industrial Revolution. Like old gunpowder canon ball cannons forged by hand. And I’m talking BIG So big it bordered on hubris. Which was it’s downfall, literally The battlements that it was set upon couldn’t handle its weight pulling back on the chains from the recoil when fired, straight up blowing itself off the wall… and “had a great fall” and all the soldiers scrambling to rebuild it and the horses pulling the ropes to lift it was fruitless, it most definitely cost them the battle. A nursery rhyme often has some tongue in cheek to it, to make fun of a disliked person or a loser of a great battle in this case… but is nearly always based on a true event taken far from its original context over years of repetition and as such left behind is the truth and is only remembered in “mother goose” context with wildly exaggerated imagery about fairytale characters. London Bridge DID fall down. It’s not just a nursery rhyme: it happened. Ring a Rosie: people died of the plague. And Humpty Dumpty was a canon that fell off a castle wall.
